More than 25 years after its style, authenticity and harrowing violence wowed, shocked and entertained audiences in equal measure, Martin Scorsese’s classic gangster film GoodFellas returns to cinemas UK-wide on 20 January 2017. It will also screen at BFI Southbank as part of the Martin Scorsese retrospective season taking place from 1 January – 28 February. Hugely influential on a whole generation of filmmakers, GoodFellas was adapted by author Nicholas Pileggi from his best-selling true-crime book Wiseguy, the most intimate account ever published of life inside the Mafia. Packed with one-liners that have become legend for aficionados, audiences who have never seen the film before, or seen it on the big screen, will revel in the brilliant performances, visual innovation, exhilarating pace, perfect period design and iconic pop/rock soundtrack that ranges from Tony Bennett’s ‘Rags to Riches’ to Sid Vicious’ version of ‘My Way’. In mid-1950s New York, would-be gangster, Irish-Italian Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) is taken under the wing of local Italian-American mobster, Paul ‘Paulie’ Cicero (Paul Sorvino) and his associates, the enigmatic James ‘Jimmy the Gent’ Conway (Robert De Niro) and the dangerously volatile Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). Lorraine Bracco is Henry’s wife Karen; their relationship revealing the highs and lows of being a mob wife. The gang make their fortune by carrying out a series of daring heists during the 1960s-70s, until paranoia and violence erupts and Henry is cornered by the FBI. His only way out is to rat on his friends. Often considered to be the best of Scorsese’s best, GoodFellas was nominated for six Oscars – with Joe Pesci winning Best Supporting Actor – and went on to win five BAFTAs. It invariably only trades places with The Godfather in contemporary polls to be named best gangster film of all time. The famous ‘Copa Shot’, when a single Steadicam tracks Henry leading Karen through the back entrance of the Copacabana restaurant is one of the most iconic shots in cinema history and just one of many endlessly watchable scenes. Scorsese himself drew on the film’s manic energy and style for his own Wolf of Wall Street in 2013.
